So my mom (being my mom) bought me a bunch of books on how to survive in the jungle, which are full of interesting info, like the best way to eat bugs. I guess I've watched too much Fear Factor, because I always imagined having to swallow down squirmy bugs. It turns out there is a better way! Here is the recipe:
Put the insects in a covered container over the fire. "It is best to turn and shake the container in order to toss the insects and prevent them from burning. Once all the insects are inert, leave them to dry further by the fire. A good test is to pick an insect from the container and crush it between your fingers; the whole body should disintegrate to a dark brown dust. Next, grind the cooked insects using a stick as a pestle. When this is done pour the powder into a container of warm water; this will separate any unpulverized wings and legs, which will float on the surface where they can be removed. The remaining liquid is little more than a tasteless protein soup, to which edible plant parts can be added to make a nourishing meal."
-Yum!

Cathleen- thanks for the bug soup recipie. Who knows when it may come in handy in Ecuador!? Can't wait for that day. I think I'd rather catch my death of plantain overdose before I eat bugs!!! Love ya! Jaime
